The Garage

William Bone assisted by his wife Marion opened for business at The Garage, Dalry on 1st November 1959; they came from Ayrshire, Burns Country.

The first improvement was to establish a petrol/ forecourt in 1960.

During the first few years the business was open for the sale of fuel and motor accessories, servicing and repairs, also vehicle recovery work was also carried out.

M.O.T testing was implemented by the government in 1961 and the Garage in Dalry was one of the first M.O.T. stations in Dumfries and Galloway.

William H. Bone their son, who now runs the business, joined the family firm in 1979 after completing his training in Ayr. It was he who being interested in the original World War 2 Jeep started to develop the ex-Military side of the business.

In 1990/91 the garage and forecourt were rebuilt. The yard where most of the ex-military goods are stored was developed in 2000.

William has travelled widely in the pursuit of his business interest, establishing contacts in Britain, Ireland, Europe, America, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. In the meantime becoming well informed and building up a substantial business in that department.

Meantime on the home front things keep moving ahead. We have Shaun Currie in the up to date workshop who has been with the firm for at least fifteen years. We still do M.O.T tests as well as services, repairs, tyres, batteries, exhausts etc, and can supply new and used cars when required.

In charge of the computerised office is Mrs Maddison who has also been with us for more years than she cares to remember. Mrs Maddison is assisted by Mrs White, who has been with the firm for into the teens of years.

In 2005 Kate, William’s wife joined the family firm; she is the “Sandwich Queen”, preparing her own fresh fillings, soups etc., for the now well established sandwich bar and outdoor lunches. She and Mrs White manage the busy shop on the forecourt.

Business has certainly moved on since 1959. Meantime William and Marion still keep an active interest in the day to day activities of The Garage in the run up to their 50th anniversary in Business.
